William Darling began his service on September 1867 as a assistant teacher in Dr Bells school and in 1870 was appointed head teacher of Dr Bells. Mr Darling entered the service of Leith Schools board in September 1877 as headmaster of Victoria School in Newhaven. He served there for a number of years after which he was transferred to St. Thomas' where he was headmaster.
When Couper Street School opened in September 1890, Mr Darling was appointed headmaster, a role he held until his death aged 64 years old.
