The plaque is inscribed 'On this site stood an ancient tavern & hostelry, visited by Queen Mary, Oliver Cromwell, Charles II and many notable French refugees, frequented by the elite of the 16 and 17 centuries, also a favourite resort of Edinburghers and Leith cronies. Demolished 1888.'
