Leith Corporation Tramways employed women as conductresses during the First World War, to replace men who had joined the armed services. They were paid less than the men, who were able to return to their old jobs after the war. Some women were also employed as drivers (known as motoresses). The woman at the centre of this photograph, wearing a different style of hat to the others, may have been a driver.
