The Leith maritime albums were compiled by the Rev Dr James Scott Marshall (1913-2010), who was the Minister of Kirkgate Church from 1947 to 1973. In 1973 when the Kirkgate Church united with South Leith Parish Church he became an associate minister. He retired in 1990 and moved to St Andrews where he continued his historical research.
Acknowledged as Leith's historian, he published several books on the history of Leith, including histories of its churches and social histories. The subject of his PhD thesis was Irregular Marriages in Leith. His commitment to Leith and its history led him to fight for the preservation of the King's Wark, Lamb's House and the Kirkgate, and to campaign for a museum of Leith. In 2009 he was elected one of 12 Pillars of Leith by the community, as part of the 400th anniversary celebrations of South Leith Parish Church.
