Horse-drawn trams replaced coaches in 1871. The driver of the first horse-drawn tram in Leith was John Brown of Iona Street, an uncle of Mrs Betty Mellis (nee Cockburn), a member of the South Leith Parish Church congregation.
After electrification of the Leith trams in 1905, until the cable-car system used in Edinburgh was converted to electric, after the amalgamation of Leith with Edinburgh in 1920, anyone travelling between Leith and Edinburgh had to change trams at Pilrig.
