The Palace Cinema opened on the 1st of January 1913 and closed on the 31st of December 1966. It was converted into a bingo hall, then in 2001 it was reopened as a public house called The Foot of the Walk. The upper area is unused and still has the original cinema seats.
The Victoria Monument, which was erected in 1907, has been moved twice since this photograph was taken, in 1968 and 2002.
