Peat Neuk ran from 70 St Andrew Street to Coalhill. This was the post-Reformation name given to the ancient St Leonard's Lane. The old Guard-house at the Coalhill end of Leith Brig was acquired by the town in 1705 from William Cleghorn, a brewer, and it was here, tradition says, that peats were stored and sold to the public in the port. By the time this photograph was taken, c 1880, the Peat Neuk had long ceased any connection with peat.
