The Seamen's House, also known as the Sailors' Home, was was paid for by a subscription of £9,000 and built with room for 56 seamen and nine officers and extra beds in the attic to accommodate up to 50 shipwrecked seamen. The foundation stone was laid in 1883. The building is now the Malmaison Hotel, which opened in 1994.
