The text says 'Horse Races were run on Leith Sands from an early period in the 17th Century till 1816, when the ''Edinburgh Race Meeting'' came to be held at Musselburgh. In 1836 the ''Leith Annual Subscription Races'' were instituted, and were run on the Sands till abandoned in 1859 (22nd September). The picture represents the scene about the year 1855. It is reproduced from a large oil painting by Willie Reid, finished and retouched by Robert Hadden. The original is in the possession of Mr David McQueen, of 33 Inverleith Gardens, and is to be seen in the well-known restaurant ''Ye Olde Three Tuns'', Hanover Street.'
This was almost the final scene, showing Leith Subscription Races before they were finally banned.
