Holyrood Abbey, monument to George, 14th Earl of Sutherland

Description

A memorial monument with stone carvings to the Earl of Sutherland in Holyrood Abbey, Edinburgh. An overhanging pediment covers a coat of arms. Columns on either side are decorated with crowns and the base has angels and skull and cross bones. The central panel has writing inscribed on it.

Holyrood Abbey stands next to Holyrood Palace in Edinburgh. The Abbey was founded by David I in 1128, several hundred years before Holyrood Palace. The Abbey was badly damaged during the Reformation. It was finally abandoned in 1768 after the roof collapsed.
