The new building for Leith Nautical College was opened in Milton Road East in 1977, replacing the previous college building which had been purpose-built in Commercial Street in 1903, although the college had started as Leith Navigational School in the Mariners' Church, Commercial Street, in 1855, and as far back as 1680 the Masters and Mariners of Trinity House had appointed a professor to teach the mathematics of navigation.
Leith Nautical College merged with Esk Valley College in 1987 to form Jewel and Esk Valley College, which merged with Telford College and Stevenson College to form Edinburgh College in 2012. Nautical education in Scotland is now mainly centred in Glasgow.
