Cardinal Joseph Gray, pictured with his Cairn terrier Rusty III, was born in 1910 in Leith, the son of an engineer, manager in Bertram's, Leith Walk. He was ordained in 1935 in Edinburgh. He moved to St Andrews where his uncle was parish priest, and studied for an MA Hons in his spare time. He became the parish priest in Hawick in 1941, and Rector of St Mary's College, Aberdeen in 1947.
He became Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh in 1951, and appointed a cardinal in 1969 - the second Scottish cardinal since 1546. He retired in 1984.
The second picture shows Cardinal Gray in canonicals as archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh.
