The accompanying text reads 'A fine portrait by Henry Raeburn which until recently was in German hands has now returned to this country and has been acquired by Messrs. Thomas Agnew and Sons. It represents the Rev. Robert Dickson, D.D., a worthy Scottish divine who was for thirty-eight years minister of South Leith, where another version of the portrait is still in the possession of the Kirk Session. He was born in 1758, and died in January, 1824, and if we estimate his age at the time the portrait was painted as about sixty, it would belong to Raeburn's last years. It is a characteristic product of his brush, direct and square-set; the colouring is the usual restrained range of crimson and black; the modelling of the face done in that criss-cross or 'crystallised' manner by means of which Raeburn secured a subtlety free from fussiness. It was exhibited at the Raeburn Exhibition of 1895 and was then in the possession of the Lord President of the Court of Session.'
