Newhaven fish market was erected in 1906 and was dilapidated by the time this photograph was taken. Fish had not been landed at Newhaven for many years, but fish from other ports was marketed there. The building was leased to Newhaven Fishsalesmen's Association (Edr) Ltd and owned by Forth Ports Authority.
The fish market was later split into two buildings, one of which was used as Harry Ramsden's fish restaurant, and is now the Loch Fyne restaurant, while the other became a smaller fish market. Part of it was also used as Newhaven Heritage Museum, which closed in 2006, and a retail fishmonger's shop took over that space in 2010.
