Text says 'A delight to have known the great painter who lived for some years just across the street from me in Glasgow ... Sat patiently two hours a week over a period of several months. He warmly approved the result. I altered background a few months ago.'

John Duncan Fergusson was born in Leith in 1874 and studied at Edinburgh College of Art and then in Paris. He is regarded as a major artist of the School of Scottish Colourists. He died in 1961 in Glasgow.
