Description
Type-written letter issued by the War Office in London in October 1915. Adressed to 'Sir' from Lord Derby, Director-General of Recruiting. Two sides of type in total. Has been folded into quarters.

The Derby scheme was introduced in October 1915. It asked men to attest their willingness to serve on the understanding that single men would be called up first. Those who had attested wore an armband to show their commitment. The scheme did not attract the reuqired numbers and was followed by conscription (compulsory service).
