This notelet is part of a set sold to raise funds for the British Red Cross and the Order of St John during World War 1.
The wounded man's uniform, and the presence of a motorbike, suggest he is a despatch rider. Despatch riders were used to distribute orders from headquarters and to transfer important information to and from the field.
Stationery was a wartime necessity, enabling contact with friends and family at home as well as those serving overseas. By purchasing Red Cross stationery, people were able to support the war effort through shopping.
