This illustration is a striking example of H. G. Bank's energetic and colourful style of lithography, much suited to the subject matter. Tableaux Vivants, meaning living pictures was a genre that grew in popularity on the stage during the Victorian era where characters appeared in costume, posed on stage to re-enact a particular scene from art, literature, everyday life or a historical event. The action would be frozen for some minutes so particular emphasis was given to the costume, make up, facial expressions and lighting in order to tell a particular story and then the curtain would fall. As a result of its popularity the genre was adapted and often played within Victorian parlours.
H.G. Banks has painted two such scenes detailing a lively cast of characters both framed by an elaborate, highly decorative border, detailing all the songs contained in Tableaus Vivants and with sufficient attention given to the composers name Warwick Williams at the bottom.
