The song sheet cover illustration for Pietro il Grande, by John Brandard depicts a coronation of possibly Catherine I with Peter the Great by her side. Peter the Great, ruled Russia from 1682 until his death in 1725 and in 1724, Catherine was crowned as Empress. The illustration is done in very rich, sumptuous colours reflecting the nature of the occasion, with white and gold brocade on the costume, and ruby coloured train and cloak, finished off with jewels and fur capes. There is a lady in waiting tending to Catherine in the background.

Louis Antoine Jullien 1812 - 1860 was a French conductor and composer, who moved to London and who created light, popular music, often touring with his orchestra. He became a well-known flamboyant figure at the time and in 1852 ran a magnificently lavish production of Pietro il Grande Opera at Covent Garden which was a flop and cost him financially. He later moved to America and later back to Paris, but suffered due to becoming bankrupt and unable to escape his debtors died in an asylum in 1860 in Paris.
