The cover illustration consists of a black and white copy of a photo of Colonel Robert Paden-Powell (1857 - 1941) by the prestigious photography firm Lafayette based in Dublin, who specialized in portrait photography of the well-known and important persons of the time. The title Mafeking March refers to the Siege of Mafeking (1899 to 1900) during the Boer war from which Sir Robert Baden-Powell emerged a hero. Fabian Scott the composer was one of the many pseudonyms used by Ernest Reeves who excelled in composing piano pieces especially military Marches, celebrating the successes of British Imperialism at the time and often composing pieces to mark important Royal occasions.
The red illustration in art nouveau style surrounds the photograph, the title appears at the top and descends down the page with graphics pertinent to the scouting movement; spears, a horse with a Stetson wearing rider, and a little book entitled Scout. These illustrations reference the Scouting movement Colonel Robert Paden-Powell was instrumental in creating.
