Mel B. Kaufman (1879-1932), was one of the most popular and prolific composers of one step dance music during the first decades of the twentieth century. Me-ow was one of his major hits, being an unexpected success that lead to his being signed by the music publishing company Sam Fox.
Little is known of the illustrator signed T. Ray for the Me-ow cover sheet. The illustration is graphically simple, making use of only three colours, black, grey and sapphire yellow. The centre of the illustration is taken up with a large singing cat, mouth open wide, with the silhouettes in black of five cats in dramatic snap shot poses on the roofline behind. The cat's head is neatly centred within a full yellow moon, with the word ME-OW appearing in a more muted yellow along the top.
