The black and white cover sheet portrays the subject Jessie, dressed in traditional highland skirt and shawl, with her head cocked, finger pointed listening out for the sound of the Highland Regiment she believes she can hear in the distance that are on their way to save them. A lady in more elegant dress is seated sideways beside her, on some logs and bales at the end of a derelict house who is gently pulling at the end of her shawl. In the background are the figures of soldiers holding bayonets. This illustration tells the story of Jessie Brown, who purportedly was the wife of a corporal fighting in the Indian Mutiny of 1857-8, when they were involved in the Siege of Lucknow (1857). On the inside page there is a copy of what is claimed to be an extract from a letter published in Le Pays, telling in more detail the story of Jessie Brown.
The song sheet cover has underneath its title the words 'also arranged as a descriptive Fantasia for the pianoforte by John Blockley'. At the bottom of the illustration is the important quote from the story: 'Dinna ye hear it, dinna ye hear it? It's the slogan of the Highlanders, We're saved, We're saved'.
