The cover illustration has at its forefront a member of the 17th Lancers, a cavalry regiment of the British army most known for their participation in the Crimean War. The Lancer is astride his horse in full dress uniform armed with a lance and red and white pennant flying, in the background are more Lancers. The illustration shows the figure in detail, with his full dress blue uniform with high gold collar, epaulettes, red belt, Czapka hat with white plume and striped trousers. The horse coat bears the regimental coat of arms.
