The Carnegie Waltz is in recognition of Andrew Carnegie, (25.11.1835 - 11.08.1919), originally from Dunfermline who went to America and became a very successful industrialist and philanthropist. Carnegie used his massive wealth to promote his lifelong interest in libraries and learning. His philanthropic interests were on a large scale, with a strong focus on libraries and providing everyone with access to learning, research and education. On the western side of the Bandstand there is a small plague which reads 'Presented by Mrs Andrew Carnegie upon her first visit to Dunfermline 1887'.
The song sheet illustration has at its very centre an image of the Dunfermline Bandstand, with a flag flying on either side. Above the bandstand heading the top is a banner with the title "Carnegie Waltz" in large bold type with a lesser horizontal banner stating 'Dedicated by permission to Mrs Carnegie'. The composer's name appears along the bottom, W. G. Chapman, Bandmaster Dunfermline Band.
Dunfermline Bandstand with its octagonal ogee-roof was built in 1888 by Walter MacFarlane & Co (Saracen Foundry) of Glasgow. You can find more information about the Dunfermline Bandstand from the
British Listed Buildings website
