The cover illustration for the song sheet is a group portrait composed of a couple standing in an embrace, with the man looking intently into his beloved's eyes while the woman is gazing forlornly up into the distance. There is a woman sitting beside them on a bench engrossed in a letter. The group composition is surrounded entirely by foliage and shrubbery, with a fence running horizontally through the middle of the illustration.

The illustration was, as it states along the top, granted for use 'by permission of the proprietors of "The Graphic" '. The Graphic was an illustrated newspaper originally founded in 1869 by William Luson Thomas, an artist and wood engraver who was also interested in social commentary and reform. He employed many talented illustrators and artists such as Luke Fildes and Hubert von Herkomer who went on to become portrait painters and Henry Woods. The newspaper also attracted many talented writers such as George Eliot and Thomas Hardy.
