Opened in 1851, this dock was improved in 1855 by the addition of the Victoria Jetty.
In the centre of the picture is Leith Sailors' Home (1885) replacing the old, much smaller home at the dock gates. By 1944 war conditions required about 40,000 bed nights per annum, which severely taxed the accommodation. To the right of the Sailors' Home is the Signal Tower, originally a windmill, making oil from rape seed, and later used for crushing lead ore.
