The approaches to Leith Harbour (from about two miles offshore, now within the Outer Harbour) were known as the Leith Roads in the 19th century. From the Roads the rebuilt Signal Tower can be seen on the left. Nelson's Monument, begun after Trafalgar in 1805 and completed in 1816, is prominent, and the little paddle steamer on the right was one of the very first.
