The only known picture of a Leith Smack. The smacks were passenger boats sailing between Leith and London from the late 18th century until superseded by steamers in the 1830s.
'Smack-rigged' vessels were rigged fore-and-aft and had a single mast.
The original of this painting, owned by the City Art Centre, has received
conservation treatment
and a layer of yellow varnish has been removed since this photograph was taken.
