In the first photograph the view looks along The Shore to the north towards Leith Harbour entrance and the swing bridge, which are just out of sight.

The second photograph shows one of the old Wet Docks, an enclosed area of water used for loading, unloading and repairing ships. At this time these included both traditional sailing ships and more modern steam ships.
