Hawthorn & Co. started in 1846 as a railway locomotive building company, began building marine engines and boilers from about 1860 at Sheriff Brae, and from about 1880 also built some small ships at their yard in Granton. In 1912 they acquired the shipyard of Thomas Morton & Co., named the Victoria Shipyard, next to Ramage & Ferguson. In 1924 Hawthorn's were acquired by Henry Robb Ltd.
