Central Library opened with three departments: Reference, Lending and the Newsroom. Central Library expanded when the Edinburgh Historical and Topographical Library and the Commercial and Economics Library were opened in 1932. The Music Library opened in 1935 and the Art Library in 1936, both providing the foundations of a cultural society in Edinburgh that assisted with the birth of the Edinburgh International Festival following the end of the 2nd World War.
