Description
Accompanying text reads:
"A corner of the cheerful main square of Hesdin. On the face of the buildings in the square may be read both the sixteenth century origin of the little town and the influence of the Spanish domination in the seventeenth century. The town hall, nearly filling one side of the square, is of a style akin to our own Jacobean; and the quaint and rococo quality of many of the buildings has an entertaining effect like that of delightfully odd faces. The town has not been scarred by the war; it is approached from all sides by roads sloping under fine trees; it has many gardens full of roses and on its north is an ancient forest which still harbours wild boars."
