Domyo Temple (Sugawara denju Domyoji) scene from the play 'Sugawara and the Secrets of Calligraphy' ('Sugawara denju tenarai kagami')
Description
This scene is from Act 2 of the play 'Sugawara and the Secrets of Calligraphy'. Sugawara is shown descending the stairs to meet the awaiting palanquin. This may be the false escort arranged by Shihei to trap Sugawara. In the background, Taro and Hyoe, Shihei's minions, are shown disposing of the body of Taro's murdered wife. Tatsuta is killed by her husband, Taro, when he realises she has overheard the plot to capture Sugawara.

This is one of a set of 50 prints donated to Edinburgh City Libraries by Marie Ferguson Dyer in honour of her father Henry Dyer. Dyer was a Scottish engineer who became the first Principal of the Imperial College of Engineering in Tokyo in 1872.
