Life on the front lines of the trenches was too physically and emotionally strenuous a place for soldiers to endure for long periods. To combat this, many armies developed a system of rotation, with front line troops falling back when their tenure up front came to an end. As soldiers shifted to rear positions, they had more access to leisure time and rest, and the further back they went, the more organized the leisure and rest became.
Often at the most nether points from the lines were rest camps, where battalions would spend several days in recuperation. While certainly a much needed break from the front lines, rest camps were not places of overwhelming luxury and comfort. Soldiers slept on straw filled beds and occupied their time by playing games, sports or writing home.
