On April 9th, 1917 the British Army mounted a large-scale offensive against the German forces positioned at Arras. Despite the 9th Scottish Division's victory in the town of Athies, which sits northeast of Arras, the German military recovered and the battle fell into a stalemate after five weeks of fighting.
For the British Army, the campaigns at Arras are remembered for both their tactical achievements and their great losses; it is estimated that as many as 158,660 British troops perished during the Battle of Arras.
