Children's lives were deeply impacted by the First World War. Despite the fact that they were expected to carry on as normal, children said goodbye to their fathers, endured the absence of their mothers as women left their traditional roles at home to take up unoccupied jobs, and grieved the loss of family and family friends. There was a clear sense of anxiety among children as they struggled to cope with wartime events. An examination of a collection of German children's essays also indicates that children were highly influenced by propaganda and their regular school studies were disrupted by wartime chaos.
