Description

A tall section of the Flodden Wall stands in the Vennel, Edinburgh. It has a crenulated and several arrow slots. A more modern building is built behind the wall. Two school boys stand at the top of a set of stairs that leads down from the wall.

The Flodden Wall was built around Edinburgh following the Battle of Flodden in 1513. Subsequent military incursions into Edinburgh showed the wall offered little practical defence to the city. Substantial sections of the wall are still visible in the Vennel, close to the Grassmarket, and on the Pleasance as it nears the Cowgate.

The Vennel is a narrow street in Edinburgh leading from West Port near the Grassmarket to Heriot Place near George Heriot's School. 'Vennel' is a Scots word meaning 'steep lane'.
