Description

A lady wearing a brown kimono almost loses her travelling hat in a gust of wind. The poem is by Sarumaru-dayu and the verse describes being lost in the mountains. The 'Thirty-six Immortals of Poetry' in the title of the series refers to 36 poets selected by nobleman Fujiwara no Kinto (996 - 1075) for a compilation of 'waka' poetry. From a series of 36 prints titled 'Thirty-six Immortals of Poetry: Mirror of Ethics for Girls' ('Donyo Kyokun Kagami')

This is one of a set of 50 prints donated to Edinburgh City Libraries by Marie Ferguson Dyer in honour of her father Henry Dyer. Dyer was a Scottish engineer who became the first Principal of the Imperial College of Engineering in Tokyo in 1872.
