In 1841 Geikie's biographer Thomas Dick Lauder wrote that the artist rarely painted landscapes unless it was to act as a "subsidiary to groups and figures".

This painting seems to be an exception. The artwork does feature human interest, in the form of travellers passing along a rough track and agricultural labourers working in the fields beyond. However, its main concern appears to be the landscape itself, with its panoramic horizon and vast expanse of sky.

It is worth noting that at the Trustees' Academy Geikie had been taught by the landscape painter Andrew Wilson, who had studied under Alexander Nasmyth. Although Geikie's career took a very different path, paintings such as this suggest that his development was at least partially informed by these predecessors.
