Most of St. Giles Cathedral dates to the 15th century. Its crown-shaped spire is its most famous and most recognisable feature, and was added in the late 1400s when Edinburgh was part of the Archdiocese of St Andrews. The crown spire is a traditional medieval form of church spire, where curved, stone flying butresses form the open shape of a rounded crown.
