The image of the 'Child in the Garden,' while not the most innovative in style, illustrates an important aspect of Crane's work. The child is in a natural setting, surrounded by nature, animals and a book which illustrates the changes in attitudes towards children in Victorian Britain. Childhood was beginning to be something that was protected, judging by a large number of laws passed during that time, i.e. The Forster Acts. Compare this image to images from
Life History of a Slum Child
exhibition. Though Baby's Own Aesop was out of the price range of the very poorest children, it was still available to a range of children much broader than books illustrated in the decades before Crane. Crane's interest in education and socialism came to fruition in his later work with Nellie Dale in school primers, which were available to all children.
The decorative elements framing the image are in Crane's design style, blending classical, fantasy and medieval motifs.
