This simple image taken From Walter Crane's Baby's Own Aesop, was originally published in 1887, in the third of his wildly popular Baby's Own... series. The image shows the importance and recognition of craft and the making of art in Crane's work. The mouse is creating a frieze, Greek inspired to fit with the theme, while some traditional artist's tools are shown at the bottom again emphasizing the importance of the creation of art. The image is fun and meant to entertain and engage the child user. This reflects a shift in Victorian society, where children were being thought of as active consumers of art who had different needs than adults.
