The image of violet and primrose shows how far Crane has come from his Pre-Raphaelite roots. These are not the same robust and flowing women depicted earlier. However, they are depicted in dresses reminiscent of contemporary Aesthetic dress, with big shoulders and tight fitting sleeves and gathered at the waist; Crane is putting current trends into his children's books.
