This picture is from Crane's collaboration with Mary de Morgan. The image of this Princess incorporates Crane's interest in Greek art. ThePprincess's clothing, the movement of the wind through the bottom of her dress and her stance are reminiscent of Greek sculpture. Like the early influence of Renaissance art, Crane's early work is noticeably affected by Japanese woodcuts which were coming into England, and is seen in Crane's treatment of the ocean waves and skies. However, you can also see some influence of the Pre-Raphaelites, the Princess's profile view and her hair show some influence from this contemporary movement. Crane's art here is not as personal as it becomes later. However, by using traditional methods of engraving, rather than more modern ways of illustrating, Crane is emphasising the importance of craft in his art, which becomes even more important in his later work as an Arts and Crafts artist.
