The image of the shepherd under the hawthorn bush shows the maturity of the style found in Crane's Baby's Own Aesop. The elements are quite similar, a personification of something natural in a classical influenced style but in the case of the image in Shakespeare's Garden, the lines are more flowing and sinuous and the palette is cooler and lighter. The woman in the hawthorn bush also shows Crane's debt to the Pre-Raphaelites with the movement in her arms and dress.
