The title page from Queen of Summer, or Journey of the Lily and the Rose shows Crane's mature style. This book is clearly very influenced by his design works which we saw glimpses of in his Baby's Own Aesop. The intricate background of tangled flowers is similar to his Arts and Crafts wallpapers. The people are dressed in Aesthetic style clothing with full shoulders and tight fitting sleeves, and both have the romantic look of Pre-Raphaelite figures. Crane's penchant for Greek objects is also seen in the urn with the date of publication. Like in the images for Baby's Own Aesop the garden is the place of imagination. This book has anthropomorphised flowers in a medieval court where the Rose and Lily knights have a tournament. This garden element is important as it is in nature that the full extent of imagination can be realised, unlike in the increasingly mechanised world of which Crane and his children readers were part. Crane consistently uses gardens in this way.
