Owen Jones was the first to noticing that Islamic ornament was constructed following a mathematical basis. This is clearly exemplified on the different drawings he did of the 'muqarnas', the stalactite -shaped decorative forms represented in this image. Muqarnas (or mocárabes) are a way of ornamenting architecture very typical of Islamic architecture, being particularly common on Moorish buildings.

All illustrations in this volume are attributed to Jones and his sometime travelling partner Jules Goury, a Welsh architect who died of Cholera during their six month stay at The Alhambra.
