Interlaced ornaments are used as borders on mosaic dados, as bands enclosing panels or as square stops within the inscriptions. Geometry here is used to create interlaced ornament that would serve as a frame to surround larger ornaments. These patterns recall Greek art, which still had influence across the the Mediterranean Sea. To illustrate the great fascination that Owen Jones had for the Alhambra, the 'Moresque Ornament' chapter within The Grammar of Ornament is the only one that uses just one building, the Alhambra, for every plate. The other chapters - Persian, Chinese, Renaissance - take their illustrations from a broader range of examples.
