It is believed the settlement at Crail dates from at least Pictish times and was an important fishing and market town since the 12th century when Robert the Bruce gave controversial permission to hold markets on Sundays. Situated on the picturesque East Neuk of Fife the town now has a roaring tourist trade as people come to see the pretty miniature harbour and view the 17th to 19th century architecture which has historically been a draw for artists.
