Colinton has a history as an autonomous town or parish since before the 11th century but was incorporated into the city of Edinburgh in 1920. Its origins lie as a mill town due to its position on the Water of Leith and mills producing textiles, snuff and paper all operated their at one time or another. It is believed that the first bank notes printed by the Bank of Scotland were printed on paper produced in a Colinton mill. Its close proximity to the Pentland hills and their many reservoirs could explain its inclusion in this volume of photographs.
